America Reads is a literacy program aimed at helping students in grades K-4 improve
their reading skills. This program works with elementary schools in New Hampshire
and Vermont, located 10-30 minutes away from Dartmouth. The America Reads program
at Dartmouth allows students in the Federal Work Study Program to be employed
as in-school tutors, paying $11/hour. The time commitment is anywhere from 2 -
10 hours a week, including paid travel time.
Tutors work individually and with 4-6 children in small groups each week. They
stay with the same children throughout the term, and preferably throughout the
year. Through steady reading sessions and creative activities, tutors work to
instill a love of reading in the children they work with.
