Mouth is kicking off 15F with issue #26: Idolatry, and we're looking for submissions. For the first time, we will also accept podcast and spoken submissions as a consequence of our new partnership with the radio program This Dartmouth Life.

Write about the person you admire most, or the thing you love that's also your downfall. Think about what happens when whomever (or whatever) you idolize falls from grace; about obsession and what fuels it; or take your cue from religious icons—consider the tension between the sacred and the profane, the relationship between form and meaning. What happens when you try to represent the ineffable in the concrete?

"All the idols made by man, hover terrifying they might be, are in point of fact subordinate to him, and that is why he will always have it in his power to destroy them" (Simone de Beauvoir)

"There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship" (David Foster Wallace)

"It was not intended as a compliment. It was a confession. Now that I have made it, something seems to have gone out of me. Perhaps one should never put one's worship into words" (Oscar Wilde, The Picture of Dorian Gray)

fiction/nonfiction, poetry, book/music reviews, and other forms welcome.

Accepting submissions until October 2nd at [log in to unmask]
